Oil Prices and the World Economy

چکیده
Oil prices, associated with bouts of inflation and economic instability over the last 30 years, have been rising in recent months. We argue that the inflationary consequences of a rise in oil prices depend upon the policy response of the monetary authorities. They can ameliorate the short term impacts on output, but only at the cost of higher inflation. In the short term the size and distribution of output effects from an increase in oil prices depends on the intensity of oil use in production and on the speed at which oil producers spend their revenue. In the medium term higher oil prices change the terms of trade between the OECD and the rest of the world and hence reduce the equilibrium level of output in the OECD. In this paper we first discuss oil market developments and survey previous studies on the impacts of increases in oil prices. We then use our model, NiGEM, to evaluate the impact of temporary and permanent oil price increases on the world economy under various policy responses, and also analyse the impact of a decline in the speed of oil revenue recycling. 1 This paper has benefited from inputs from a number of colleagues at the Institute, and we would like to thank Martin Weale, Sylvia Gottschalk, Ian Hurst, Dawn Holland and Rebecca Riley for their contributions. We have also benefited from comments received at an Austrian Central bank Seminar on the Macroeconomic Implications of Higher Oil Prices. All errors remain ours. The Effect of Exchange Rate, Oil Prices and Global Inflation Shocks on Macroeconomic Variables for the Iranian Economy in the form of a DSGE Model
T he world economy has experienced a bulk of positive and negative shocks in crude oil prices and exchange rates over the years, and that global inflation has undergone some changes. Such shocks have affected the macroeconomic variables in the countries of the world and have challenged the economies of these countries, and have led them to take different measures to protect themselves agai...

After the World War II, the world economy was disrupted and changed due to oil and its prices. The research in this paper presents the basic statistical features and economic characteristics of the Gulf economy. The main features of the Gulf economies and its heavy dependence on oil exports, its dualism between modern and traditional sectors and its rapidly increasing affluences are particularl...
متن کاملEvaluate the Fundamental Factors on the World Oil Price
Fluctuations in crude oil prices are among the factors affecting other economic indicators, and therefore these fluctuations have always been of interest to economists. In this paper, the effect of fundamental market factors (supply and demand of crude oil) on changes in world oil prices is addressed and supply and demand elasticity are estimated using the simultaneous equations system consider...
متن کاملOil and the world economy: some possible futures.
This paper, using a six-region dynamic stochastic general equilibrium model of the world economy, assesses the output and current account implications of permanent oil supply shocks hitting the world economy. For modest-sized shocks and conventional production technologies, the effects are modest. But for larger shocks, for elasticities of substitution that decline as oil usage is reduced to a ...
متن کاملFuture of the World Oil Market with an Expanding Role of Shale Oil: A System Dynamics Approach
In this paper, we develop a dynamic system model to predict the effects of shale oil production on demand and supply of oil. We study the interaction between demand and supply of OPEC and non-OPEC member countries and supply of shale oil, oil price, growth of the global economy, development of new oil reserves and alternative energies. In our model, OPEC acts passively and covers the market d...
